1.Blue Railroad Train

This great Delmore Brothers tune has been a favorite since I started listening to Bluegrass. Of course the version on Tony Rice's iconic Manzanita album is pretty much stuck in my ear forever. I wanted this to be kind of bluesy sounding, remembering the way my old friend, Joel Mabus used to play “Columbus Stockade Blues”.
2. Everything Happens To Me

My mother always says that Bluegrass music makes sad subjects sound happy. It definitely worked on this sad Jazz standard. Chris'Bass has just the right amount of swingy bounce and Yoshihiro plays beautiful accompaniment throughout and a great banjo solo! Although the words are depressing, this one brings a smile to my face every time I listen.
3. One Day I Walk

I have admired Bruce Cockburn's playing and song writing since TJ first introduced me to his music. (Thanks TJ!) Not being much of a finger style guitarist I have mostly listened until now. I probably first heard the New Grass Revival version of this from their album “Commonwealth” and one day when I tried the intro on mandolin it almost worked! Yoshihiro's Henderson OM-42 sure sounds nice on this one!
4. I Wish You Knew

I'm a huge Louvin Brothers fan since my days working at Elderly Instruments in the 80s. This tune shows off Yoshihiro's prowess on the 5-string and it was a lot of fun to play!
5. Last In Love

Another great song from JD Souther that has been favorite for a while. More beautiful guitar picking from Yoshihiro and Chris is spot on on this and every song on this album! I used a Kyser Cut Capo for the rhythm guitar part.
6. Paradise

We lost the amazing songwriting and story telling legend John Prine in 2020 but he left us with such a rich body of music. I guess this is the first of his songs that I learned and although written in 1971 it still seems timely as we still struggle to live in harmony with our planet.
7. East Meadow
Scott- Mandolin Yoshihiro-McPherson MG-4.0 XPW Guitar Chris- Tune Six-String Bass My friend and amazing pianist / composer Jonathan Katz wrote this about his home but it touched me as if it was about my home too. The first time I heard His solo piano I wanted to play it on mandolin. Again, Chris'bass is perfect and Yoshihiro created a beautiful feeling with his metal pick three fingered guitar playing. His McPherson guitar sounds pretty awesome too!
8. Peabody's Coltrane

I heard somewhere that Yoshihiro had played John Coltrane's “Giant Steps” on his banjo
at Berkley years ago. I got the idea to make it into a fiddle tune and here's what it
became. Chris'bass holds back the swing until just the right moment and we're off!
Yoshihiro lays down the rhythm on his 1930 L-5 and takes what sounds to me like a
future legendary banjo solo. Chris also came up with the name!
9. Last Train To Clarksville

As a kid I loved the Monkees and this is one of my favorites from their catalog. Thinking about songs for this album I had the image of the opening riff on banjo and Yoshiro made it great with his idea to lower the tuning. Although we recorded this in August
2021 it is one of two anti-war songs that are, unfortunately, very timely now as we release this in 2022.
10. Monk's Mood

I was looking at a transcription of Thelonious Monk playing this and when I tried it on mandolin it mysteriously fit! Practicing Monk's Mood before recording my wife asked me, “Are you sure those are the right notes?” Luckily after listening a few more times , she likes it now!
11. Last Letter Home

Originally by The Amazing Rhythm Aces, this is the other anti-war song and the last song that we recorded for this album. I had thought about doing this song but I decided not to since Sam Bush had done it recently on his “Late As” Usual ”album. One day, when I looked at that album again I realized that it was made in 1985! I loved both of their versions so this is probably a somewhat hybrid version. I thought that clawhammer banjo would be nice and this is a rare recording of Yoshihiro's clawhammer! Although this is set in the American Civil War, this repeating story is very familiar: Old leaders sending young men to fight and die for causes that they often don't really understand.
